Hatred puts every child at risk…
but imagine a world
where Love wins…
Now more than ever, this is the message
that young people need to hear.
As hateful rhetoric surges all around us, it’s critical that youth feel empowered to stand up to bullying and intolerance, whether it’s happening to them or to others. Working with noted DC and Marvel Comics author, Jeremy Holt, best known for their trailblazing graphic novel Made In Korea, and with illustrator, Chong Hou, we have developed a story that explores how Love trumps Hate, and posits that our differences can become a source of strength.
The strategy of working with a graphic novel is rooted in the format’s appeal, as well as the power of storytelling to shape young minds - in a 2023 study by the National Literacy Trust, 40.3% of children and young people aged 8 to 18 reported that they read comics or graphic novels on paper, screen, or both at least once a month! As a result, schools and libraries are actively promoting them as an effective way to engage youth attention.
For our first major project, we created the Fast Forward curriculum to teach young people soft skills like conflict resolution, positive communication, and emotional resilience. We activated it with organizations like My Friend’s Place and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the greater Laguna Beach area, and received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Now we’re partnering with the Asian Educators Alliance, Boys and Girls Clubs of Metro Los Angeles, Laguna Beach, and Santa Cruz, and Big Brothers Big Sisters to distribute tens of housands of free printed copies, along with a free digital edition. In collaboration with educators and therapists, we are also producing a workshop curriculum to allow young people to engage with the graphic novel’s themes in depth.

Why Kindness Matters Now More Than Ever
Leading with compassion and teaching kindness are essential if we want our kids to grow into healthy and responsible adults.
Today, we are facing a crisis that threatens to replace these core values with intolerance; an unsettling reality for us, and an even heavier burden for the next generation.
At the Satyagraha Foundation, we focus on youth empowerment because a young person’s future depends on how supported and confident they feel growing up. Our upcoming graphic novel uses the power of storytelling to explore the challenges they face and inspire hopeful, constructive paths forward.
